It is instructed in the constitution of Pakistan to provide free education to its citizens between the ages 5-16 however education is still a concern that the country needs to tackle, almost 70 years since independence the country has only reached the maximum literacy rate at 60% in year 2016 (Haq, 2017). The changing governments in the country have failed to assess the real causes of educational deterioration. The education administration is slack, corrupt and rather helpless against the student community. There are no proper checks on the functioning of the educational institutions. In our society teaching is not considered a good profession and people, who are in this profession not sincere with it, teachers are mostly absent but still paid in the public sector schools and colleges. Accountability is missing at all levels as the current system fails to train teachers with inadequate facilities and unchanged syllabus (Majeed, 2011). Work and money needs to be spend on the future generations of Pakistan.
Education and the correct chosen career make a person successful. Our society forces teenagers to stick to tried and tested ways when they have to decide what path to choose. Not pursuing your career in the desired direction can create disinterest and result in failure even for the people with best abilities and knowledge. Unfortunately career counseling is not much of a belief in our country as people are misled in deciding a career and at times are told what to pursue and given no options. (Wajid, 2012) Having proper career counseling the students can avail better career opportunities of their likings and can have better choices for their careers in future. Neither the parent due to their ignorance due to which they can’t chose proper subject and proper filed nor the teachers due to lack of professionalism are able to guide them. Lack of guidance is very serious problem which students face in Pakistan (Saleem, 2012).
What needs to be done is create awareness to parents and teachers about the widened and innovative wide range of career opportunities in today’s world. There needs to be a step taken in educating our teachers and parents about how important career counseling is for their children. To create jobs for a certain field there needs to be enough knowledge, skilled workers and proper education curriculum. More career options to decide from result in a higher number of different jobs in the market, and it will take off some burden from doctor, engineering and banking sectors. Career counseling stars at school level with several meetings held privately between teacher and student with involvement of parents. To guide the student onto the right path by developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to successfully examine their own lives, explore and evaluate a wide range of education and career options, and make reasoned and researched goals for their future.is a duty of both the parents and the teacher. (Nasar, 2014)
Political and economic instability in Pakistan has damaged the foreign investment ratio as many textile industries in the recent years have shifted to neighboring countries with less blackout and security concerns for their workers. Job market in Pakistan is in turmoil, as thousands of graduates every year increase the ratio of unemployment as the continuous failure of the government in creating sufficient amount of jobs for the people. (Ahmed, 2011) A vast ratio of young generation opts to study in high ranked universities, settle abroad and continue their ambition due to lack of facilities and opportunities in our country. Previous generations and the governments that have ruled are responsible for providing current inadequate educational environment in the country. Pakistani universities failed to reach the top 500 universities mark and the educational standard being taught to our children in junior level study will create more problems and obstacles for the future generations. The mentality of not talking to our children about their career ambitions but rather dictating them in deciding a career for their future is an old practice in our country. Public sector educational institutes offer below standard education and private institutes that offer education in different career opportunities are out of financial reach for most of our learners.
For a better future and skilled generation the education environment needs a significant change. Students should be taught more practical knowledge rather than old theoretical studies, school syllabus needs to be updated. Teachers need to be trained to build a healthy environment in class and friendly relationship with their students so they do not hesitate to consider them as their counselors and be guided about the respective career the students wants to pursue in. Parents should be made aware about the scopes and problems of every field and with great respect tell the student to make the decision for himself (Saleem, 2012).
